Here is my hurricane posse - Bryce, Cameron, & Bradley:
Walter & I got the boys out in the yard today and we cleaned up all the branches, sticks, and junk that landed in our yard. Cameron & Bradley even went into the boat slip and the dock and dislodged some plants/weeds that have been growing under there for a couple of months, so they really cleared the place out!!Our propane company brought their truck out today and topped off our propane tank, which is great. They have assured their customers that they will be out and getting the propane to us. I wont even tell you how much it is costing to run our generator, but it's worth it not to be sitting here in the dark, sweating, and worrying about losing everything in our refrigerator/freezer. Well, ok, maybe I will tell you since i'm looking at the bill - $50/day! Our neighbors have the whole house generator that runs everything in their house (A/C included) and theirs is costing $100 day! FEMA may reimburse these expenses, I'm told. Also, our mail and garbage service came today! How people get out and work in all this mess, not to mention the fact that their families probably have needs that aren't being met right now, is beyond me, but it was nice to see some normalness going on.
There is supposed to be a site set up a few miles from us where you can get MRE's, ice, water, etc. We went to see if they were giving anything out yet, but so far the "pods" haven't shown up yet. If we can get over to the grocery store, we wont need anything from the site, but it's nice to know that is an option. It's scary when you can't buy gas to get to wherever you need to go to shop for supplies.
I mentioned yesterday that the condo where we lived before moving to our house a year ago (where we lived during Katrina) lost it's chimney and has a gaping hole in the roof. Well, someone told us last night that the townhouse where we lived before that in Baton Rouge lost part of its roof during the storm!! So, the last 2 places we've been during hurricanes both had the roof damaged during the storm! That really seems like some kind of sign to me!!

So you're saving $50/day for a little discomfort by not having A/C? I'd do that too.
That is crazy! I'm glad you guys are doing so well and got a lot done today. It sounds like you guys are making the most of your time.
Hugs!

I cannot believe the turrentual rains and flooding that we've gotten here. I think our area has gotten the most rain; parts of our city are flooded. I think we got what Shreveport was suppose to get. Maybe the sun will be out tomorrow.
Just wondering. Do you have hurricanes often? Might be a stupid question, but we don't have to many "natural disasters" here so I don't always pay attention when it is on the news. I have been since I "know" people this time. I have just knocked on wood. Being at the base of a mountain - a fire would not be good. Did you get the generator for this type of thing? My son wants one, but that is for camping. Do you have the boards and things that I see on tv to do your windows? Not a morbid curiosity. I just have never lived anywhere (that I recall -mom said in Indiana there were tornado's. I may have been 2) where we have to think about this. I will admit that these sound like totally stupid questions. Like being asked if it gets hot in Phoenix. Emergency Preparedness is being spoke of at everything I have been to with Steve - both with the Military and Highway Patrol. Mostly the theme is to have your family taken care of so that when you are "called to go somewhere else" you won't worry so much about them. I am thinking that we would be less prepared for a disaster than you because we haven't had to deal with it yearly, monthly, etc. We have heard about "the big earthquake" since I moved back to Utah in 1978. I was in late elementary school. It hasn't happened so we tend to let it roll. Not a good idea. I guess we get horrible rain and wind that destroys things, depending on the year, so maybe I'm just used to those and don't consider them a disaster. Sorry to blog on your comments.
A sign that you are blessed! $50 a day - holy crap! But at least you have your house, your health and your family, so it is a small price to pay. Hope the power comes back on real soon.
Sounds like you weathered the storm pretty well. Good for you.
Thanks for all the storm updates--the power being out is a bummer. We have family in Alexandria, Lake Charles, and Pitkin so some of them are feeling it too.
Dawn, I am so thankful this hurricane did not hit with the full force they expected. I know things are probably bad enough down there, but it should be much easier to get back to "Normal."
Oh sweetie, I thought I was relieved it wasn't coming to houston and prayed at the same time for you. I'm glad you're doing well, and I am still praying for you!!
Love you lots, Mere
Life goes on.....I am glad that things are starting to slowly move toward normal for you guys. Looks like a great cleaning crew you roped in there.
How blessed you must feel after knowing that your two previous places were so damaged.
I think what would scare me the most at this point is people wandering around trying to "take" what they need. Is there any police presence?
Keep safe.
I know how you feel during rita we were without power for a week. We were lucky to get power so fast. I'm praying that you get power soon. Good Luck to you and God Bless!
HI just stalked over for a minute to catch up with YOU! I have been busy all WEEK getting things ready for EVAC....that does not look like it will happen but of course I was one of the many yesterday getting supplies and Weather Radios and ect...LOL
