Name it something normal and maybe it will go away

Gustav - why would you even name a storm something stupid like that? With a ridiculous name like that, this storm is likely to come after us with a vengeance just for naming it that! According to Wikipedia, (which I might add is NOT an actual real source, but one that people like me & you put information into), Gustav means "staff of the Gods." What happened to naming storms things like Robert and Julie?

I have to say it is really cool, and a bit scary, how serious our wonderful Governor Bobby Jindal is taking this storm. Before Katrina, nobody really did anything when hurricanes were looming, and we all learned some serious lessons about that. However, the storm wasn't the real problem. Most people weathered that (no pun intended) just fine, at least in New Orleans. It was when the levees broke that things fell apart. Mississippi was a different story, but I'm not really talking about Mississippi's state of preparedness right now. And it is important to be proactive about these things, and Bobby Jindal is. And I love him.

I can recall hurricanes where we didn't do a thing to prepare and then just waited to ride it out. We've had so many false alarms, that you really had to scream and yell for anyone to get nervous or even leave home during a hurricane. I remember one hurricane that hit here about 10 years ago, can't even remember the name. Some of my real life blogger friends probably remember this and were probably even there too! It was before Walter & I were dating, but were both with a large group of friends partying out of town at a hotel/bar. There was news of a hurricane, but that didn't phase us at all!! News reports were on telling people to be prepared. What did we do? We kept on partying all weekend! When it was time to go home, we were barely ahead of the storm. Then we found out that New Orleans was being EVACUATED!! Yikes! And people with us were from New Orleans and couldn't go home, so Walter brought some of them home with him for a couple of days and some went home with me. And now, here I sit FIVE DAYS before a hurricane could possibly come this way and I'll be honest, i'm worried! I'm not so worried about myself, my family, my house, etc. I just don't know how we could survive the damage caused by Katrina & Rita in our state (and others) again, especially since there is still so much suffering going on. And do you think our levees are somehow fixed now? Ha Ha. No, i'm sure they aren't, but luckily (or unluckily) not many people live in the areas now that flooded so bad. And that is because they lost EVERYTHING and can't live there anymore. So yeah, it's a viscious cycle that we don't need to repeat.

And yes. We are cancelling our trip to New York! We will likely lose $300 for cancelling the tickets unless the area is put under a hurricane warning before our flight Friday morning, but that's ok. They will credit the rest toward another flight at a future date. And there is a bright side! Cathy & Brent will be in town for STEAK NIGHT tomorrow night!! Yay!!

Ok. Enough of that. Today was a very hectic day at work. I had several meetings that took up most of my time, and only had time to meet with 1 student. I did get permission slips sent out for 4 Why Try groups that I am going to do. My co-worker has been trained in the program and will co-lead 2 groups with me, then I will do 2 on my own. I'm excited about getting those started and see how they work out!

I am so nervous about the darn thing it is just silly, I have put myself on a mandatory news break and will not watch it until Thursday evening. One of the scariest things for me was seeing grocery stores with nothing on the shelf! I went to winn-dixie today to stock up.

I, too, am very nervous about this storm. It seems like just the other day that Katrina and then Rita barreled in and destroyes parts of our state that are still trying to recover and rebuild. My daughter is at McNeese right now and I told her when she comes home this weekend to have her apartment hurricane ready, just is case she is not able to return after Labor Day. She said the University is already getting the students prepared, making sure they are signed up with the emergency alert system. I hope Gustav just disappears off the radar, but I know that someone will probably have to deal with this weird named storm.

BTW--I saw on Bobbie's blog about the Candy Jar Blue Bell--haven't tried that one---but have you tried the Banana Pudding one??? It is wonderful!!! and so is Southern Hospitality!!

Great!! now I want Blue Bell

I would be pretty upset if I were named Gustav thats for sure. We'll all be hoping he loses his momentum and peters out.

So is steak night just once a week?

I hate those 'predicted' projected paths of the storm. I was glad to see this morning that old Gus had moved 80 miles south of where he was 24 hrs ago, but then that makes his projected path landing right on top of us!! Uggh, I hate this time of year!!!

I personally think that Gustav is a good name for a hurricane. Why would you want to name a mean storm something bubbly?

Yep... I agree! How dumd is that name. I cant even say it right. I do have water and I gased up my tank... thats about as far as I got. Guess I will just have to keep my eyes open. Take care and sorry to hear about your trip. Maybe next time>

Hate that you are canceling your trip, but it is a good choice ... our worst hurricane was Hugo ... it sucked ... hope he takes a turn and does no damage!!!

Holy Smokes! I totally forgot about us partying in Laf. Your husband, before he was the wizard of your life, provided me a pain reliever that I'm not sure was legal or over the counter but it sure worked. The trip back to Baton Rouge was very interesting. Everyone was headed West and we were going East thinking, we obviously are going in the wrong direction. That weekend actually had another bad story. Remember, Tattoo (the person)? yikes.

wait, my above commment did not sound right. Mr Wizard, Dawn's Now husband, always had this pain reliever I just never heard of and now still use to this day. It is over the counter so before anyone thinks I was serious. I was... Just Kidding!

This didn't go through the first time, maybe. If it is a double, sorry. I've always wondered what it would be like to worry about a tornado or storm like Gustav. Living in Utah, we don't worry much about that. We rarely even have humidity. Sometimes there is to much rain and some flooding. But not often. Reading your blog has made it more real to me. I guess it is good to visit other blogs. We tend to be in our own bubble. I visited Camp Shelby 2 years ago this month before my husband went to Afghanistan. It was so amazing to me that it was all green and you couldn't even see the tree behind the next. So different from here. The only town I recall is Hattysburg(sp). We spent time in New Orleans at the French Quarter. My favorite vacation ever. I'll admit we steared clear of one street. Shelby was my first experience with actual humidity. There and N. O. It felt like a great granny's quilt being tossed on you. My husband has been keeping up on the storm. He always knows people coming and going at Camp Shelby. Good luck with all this.
