So, for the first time in 10 or more years, we got snow this week! And for the first time in my whole life, we got A LOT of it. It was very beautiful, but also very dangerous for us here. We are not equipped for snow here and don't know how to do anything in it, like drive. I attempted to go to work Tuesday during the snowfall, and my car skidded on ice on a small bridge and hit the side of the guard rail. I wasn't hurt and my car only got some chipped metal on the wheels, but it shook me up enough that I just drove home and didn't leave again all day. Cameron's school was closed the whole day (he goes in a different parish than I work in) and my schools closed at 11. His parish was on top of that and did the right thing, in my opinion. It was dangerous to get all those kids out in busses, and then turn around and bring them back home in that mess.

I've almost finished Christmas shopping and I do nearly everything online. I hate the crowds and discovered the wonders of online shopping and free shipping years ago. There are a few things that I'll have to go out and get, and I'll do that this week. My family has decided to only buy gifts for the kids and grandkids, so that equals 5 gifts, and Walter's family draws names, so we have 3 gifts to buy there. That is SUCH a nice thing, considering we usually buy something for everyone in my family (11) and something for all of the kids in Walter's family (lost count, but at least 20). Sean & Cameron really just want money, so we'll get a small something for them to put under the tree. I save JP's money in our account so that when he gets home someday, he will have some money to get a used car or something. Then I have money for Elizabeth & her boyfriend, unless she tells me something she wants. Sometimes she will, but so far not this year. I've bought gifts for Landen, Bradley, & Mack, and I think we're done except for Walter & I getting each other's gifts. I have bought all but 2 things for him, but he's a wait-til-the-last-minute kind of shopper, so I have seen one thing under the tree for me so far! There really isn't much I asked for, so it will be fun to be surprised!
Speaking of JP, he is doing really well. He usually goes through a depression when the trial is reset, but seems to be fine right now. He is writing to friends a lot and has been drawing like crazy. It's so neat to see him rediscover something that was so important to him when he was little. He is sending out personalized drawings to different people, and it's really helping him to have that to fall back on. The trial date is now 4/27, so we'll just hurry up and wait some more. My friend, Lesley, & I are planning a trip to visit him Jan. 9 - 11, and my sister says she will visit him this week. I'll keep my fingers crossed on that!
I have been busy helping other people with Christmas this year. My friends and I always adopt a family to provide their Christmas presents. I like to pick a family where the parent works but is just struggling. We have done that this year for a wonderful family, and then I got word from a youth minister that I know (who worked with JP a lot when he was younger), and she is collecting money for an adolescent group home for Christmas. These kids are homeless, throw-a-ways, or foster care children and most are reaching the age where they will have to move into their own apartments and take care of themselves. They are all working and in school and 80% of their income is being saved to help them once they graduate, so they asked us to help raise money for gift cards to give them so they can buy things for their new homes. How awesome is that? So, I've been working on collecting money for that and we will deliver the gift cards to them on Saturday. If anyone wants to donate, just let me know! It's a wonderful cause!
Walter & I went to his office Christmas party last night and it was fun. They had a band and some wonderful catered food. They give door prizes and always get enough to make sure every couple gets something. We won a camoflauge duffle bag, which we decided will end up under the tree for Cameron, since he is a hunter.
This is a picture from our night with my brother, Kenny, who was in town from Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. His original plans included attending JP's trial, but he decided to still come visit friends and family in Baton Rouge even though the trial plans were changed. He spent the night with us Monday night and we enjoyed having him here.
This is me and my baby brother. He is 18 months younger than me, but he's not all that little! He is 6'5 and I am only 5'9.
It's amazing what kids will do for others that they would never do for their parents. My brother got Cameron to put on a Sombrero in a Mexican restaurant when we went out to eat Monday night.
This is my great-nephew, Elijah. Isn't he sweet? My sister sent me this the other day, then told me that her son, who just had a baby girl with a different girlfriend, has now left that girlfriend. Yikes. At least my sister isn't having to keep the baby 3 - 4 days a week like she does Elijah, but still.

Hey! I'm resurfacing on the blogging world, or trying to at least. I love the pictures of snow, very cool. I'm glad that everything is going well with you guys. Are you staying in Baton Rouge for the holidays?
I lurk quite a bit sometimes but I comment occasionally. I will try to work on that. We got snow here too but ours wasn't near as much as yours. Beautiful pics. I got the kids out of bed that night to go play in ours. I so wish I lived somewhere that snowed more than once every 5-10 years. :)
Yep--the snow was very cool. I wish it could have stayed around at least the whole day. Ours came in the early morning hours and was melting away by noon. Kids had fun though.
I do the majority of my shopping online too, hate fighting the crowds. And like you, I have to get out to some stores this week--dreading it. Then it's on to wrapping.
Happy Holidays!!
Love the snow pics! You can beat these Blogger Blues! And I do know what you are feeling! :)
Hi Dawn.
Loved this post. I can tell already that you are a pretty special frined to have. I am so glad you dropped by my blog today and I will definetly be back to yours.
Oh, yeah!!....Kenny....from Atlanta! IS he the brother that went ape about his crazy Louisiana family - the blog that you shared on your own blog and totally cracked me up?
Beautiful snow pictures (we didn't get any here in Monroe) and yes! You should have enjoyed your snow day and not gotten out on the road!
It ticks me off, too, that people read my blog and do not always comment, but then I learned about google analytics (google it and try it out) and it donned on me that people may be accidently clicking on your blog b/c you have their "search word" on your blog and may not actually read at all! Can you believe that? That there are actual non-blogging-readers out there? How dare they!!
Have a great week!
Hey there, stranger! I have to say that after you vanished, I really DID miss you!! I, too, don't understand the "visiting but not commenting" syndrome. I always try to comment, and I love getting comments in return! I have to share with you...when I saw it was snowing in NOLA, the first person I thought about was you! What a festive-and unusual-way to start the season!
Wow! Looks like OUR winter wonderland! Glad you're back. ;-)
Hi Dawn,
Whoa, look at that snow! And it looks so pretty. But I'm with you, I'd rather do without it. Creates too many problems in these hills. And worse than snow is ice, and we are under a winter storm warning for late tonight and into Monday. And the winter storm warning is for ice!!! I was praying so hard in church, asking the Lord not to let it happen. :-)
Helping people have a nice Christmas is a really nice deed. We do it here as well.
I do hope you continue blogging. People just don't always like to make comments, I guess. I get kind of down on blogging at times as well, and do very little of it anymore.
I always love reading all about your doings, and seeing the beautiful pictures.
Have a wonderful week!
Holiday Hugs,
Renie
I understand how you feel about the blog thing. I kinda quit writing too since I wasn't getting any feedback. It certainly is good to get yours when I do blog though. I have found other things to entertain myself lately. You know from me it goes without being said in every post, how much I care and am concerned for you and your family.
Love all of the pictures from the snow. The one of the pier is just beautiful. I can't believe it either how much snow y'all got. We didn't even get one single flake. I hope that'll happen in 2009 for us.
I know the waiting game is very discouraging for JP and your family. Still hoping for the best outcome when it does happen.
Glad the party was fun last night. There will be alot of those in the next few weeks for sure.
That picture of Cameron is priceless.
Hope you're having a good Sunday.
First I wanted to thank you for your advice and support on my blog about my son. Next, I totally agree that feedback from others is such a big part of the fun of blogging.
I can't believe you guys got all that snow! It is so pretty. It might snow here this week, but we will probably just get ice and sleet! Yuck.
We went to my husbands work Christmas party last night too. Sounds like you had a good time.
Have a great day. :)
Greetings & Salutations! I'm just Tickled Pink that you're Back in Action. We've missed ya bunches & bunches. Don't get discouraged with this Blogging Janx. Of course, you'll have your ups & your downs, but the neat thing about blogging is that you can bounce right back! And you've gotta know that you've got a TON of cyber-friends out there to lean on, oui?
I so wish I was even lurking these days. I feel like I have fallen off the face of the earth. Life has been running me, instead of me running it. I am working on that. I miss it when I don't have time to read what my friends have posted. I promise though...if I have had time to come by...I always leave a comment so you know that I have been by.
Your pictures of the snow are beautiful. Sorry about the incident on the bridge. (Scary) I am so glad you are OK.
Awww that is such a sweet pic of Elijah!
So sorry to hear about you hitting the guard rail. How scary! Are you going to get it fixed or is it not bad enough?
I did all of my shopping online too. I love shopping online!
I'm glad to hear that JP isn't depressed this time. He seems to be handling everything so well and that's a great thing! :-)
Oh yeah, great pic of you and your brother! Y'all look so much alike!
Snow?? Wow! We have nothing. Probably won't get anything...ever....not in GA. Guess I shouldn't say that because you never know, right??
I haven't even started shopping yet for Christmas. I actually have several things saved online at Toys R Us but have yet to click the "buy now" button. Guess I should do that.
I hope you continue blogging. I enjoy stopping by. :-)
Good to see you back. Driving in snow is dangerous even for us who should be used to it. We just got a few more inches this weekend. Don't look forward to driving in it tomorrow.
I can't believe the trial is pushed off that much. Hope JP keeps in good spirits until then.
I know what you mean about the comment thing. I know there are people who lurk on mine and never leave comments. I had thought about going private too,but then I might miss the chance on meeting a new blogger.Sounds like you have been very busy!! Im glad JP is doing well. I love all your snow pictures,so pretty. Take care and have a good week!!
I'm here Sista..I'm here!! LOL!! Guess you kinda knew that already though :-)
Kori, you are right... she it the BEST friend you could imagine!
Hmmmmm I'm thinking I should revive my blog too. Especially since you pointed out that the last post I made was about Hurricane Ike and it seems like I was blown away or something...LOL!!
Hey...I am here! Sorry, I do sometimes stop by and can't think of anything half way intelligent to say...so I just read and leave!
I will make a better effort...I love the look of snow but...not the cold weather and mess that goes with it...I am a Florida girl at heart!
Have a good week!
I'm not talking about those of you who leave comments off & on. There are a lot of people who come here often (sitemeter data) that never leave anything and I wish they would!
Love the pics! We (houston) got snow too but not as much as yours! It's beautiful!! Glad JP is doing well! He's been in my prayers! You were missed! Glad you're back!
Love, Mere
It IS frustrating to see how many people "look" at your blog versus how many comment... Guess it's just one of those things.
Ok... i don't know that I've ever seen a picture of the FRONT of your house, but having seen one now, I officially LUST after your house. THAT is my dream house. Unfortunately it's not something I'm going to have (long story) but I ADORE your home.
It is hard for me to adjust to what snow does to people in the south. We woke up the other morning to a light dusting and in Minnesota it would have been nothing... so I didn't even think to check to see if there was school! Well, there was a layer of ice under the snow and with the hills around here and the lack of salt/sanding trucks, we figure out school was canceled about a block away from school! WHOOPS!!!
Our work Christmas party is this Saturday, and Mr. B is driving up to go to it with me... YEAH!!! And I was a little worried because a former co-worker was going to be coming and she's a bit of a downer to me... and I just found out she's not coming. Is it wrong of me to be happy.
Ok - I'll end this comment now with a big smooshie hugs and kisses for the caring heart you have the the giving you do. You have blessed us beyong imagining.
I am here. I have had moments like you. To continue to blog, or not. It's hard to keep up, especially when you work (like me and you) I love reading and writing them and commenting too, but I do have to admit, I am slack in that department at times.
I loved the snow, but it was here and gone in no time. I can't believe it's supposed to get into the 80s this week...ugghh! The humidity is killin me :D
I do try to leave comments when I read, but I'd rather not leave a comment if I can't think of something substantial to say.
I love online shopping, too! It's so much less stressful.
O wow look at that SNOW! MY BOYS think Frost is SNOW...since they have never seen snow..I need to work on that. OOOO I love that you blogged...I have not blogged in a few days...busy trying to clean the house and take care of the little details left for Christmas and such. I will always STALK and LEAVE comments but YA know that....LOL LOL YOU GO GIRL!
Talk to you soon!
aw! I have a similar post about my readers! so funny in a way. I thot I was the only one in a sense. But you know what I do agree with you about keeping up with the joneses! But hey, whatever works for you and makes you happier, go for it girl! And oh can u send some of that snow our way? I sooooo want some snow here. They are not equipped to take care of snow here but I won't mind if the whole city closed. I just want some snowwwwww! :)
I am Guilty Guilty and more Guilty of reading and not commenting. I will not admit to reading over 30blogs a day and some days not leaving comment a-one. Sometimes I'm just lazy, sometimes all I really have to add is "hmmm."
Hi. I just found your blog. Love the pictures and what you write. I know that my blog doesn't get much traffic, but hey, I do it for me and I love to read others' blogs.
Hey, Great point! We all take from your blog and don't give. Personally, I got tired of the blog thing but I do realize it's the best way for people to catch up on our lives. So I will try real hard to keep it updated! Great Snow pics!
